A Blast on a Budget: San Blas
A lot of people ask me how we manage to travel so often and let me tell you, it's easier than you might think! It all boils down to two magic ingredients: choosing the right starting point and adopting a less-is-more vibe when it comes to travel.
Puerto Vallarta is not just a pretty face with its stunning beaches; it’s also the ultimate hub for adventures just waiting to be discovered. With its international airport and easy access to major highways, it serves up a platter of exciting destinations, all just a short drive away. And here’s the best part: the journey is half the fun! Instead of getting caught up in luxury travel, why not embrace the thrill of the open road? A few hours from Puerto Vallarta can lead you to some truly unforgettable experiences.
One of our favorite jaunts? San Blas, Nayarit! Just a breezy two-and-a-half-hour drive away (or you can make a day of it and stop at all the cool little towns and villages along the way), this charming coastal town is a treasure trove of culture, nature, and mouthwatering food. So, grab your favorite road-trip snacks, crank up the music, let the anticipation build, and realize that the ride itself is part of the adventure.
As you make your way from Puerto Vallarta to San Blas, get ready for an exciting drive that takes you through enchanting coastal towns and picturesque landscapes along the scenic Carretera Federal 200, also known as Carretera Pacífico. Your first stop might be the beautiful village of La Cruz La Cruz de Huanacaxtle famous for its peaceful waters and stunning marina, or the vibrant town of San Francisco (San Pancho), known for its bohemian vibe and beautiful beaches that attract surfers and artists alike. Just a little further along the journey, the charming surf town of Sayulita welcomes you with its colorful streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and lively markets.
Continuing along, you’ll glide further into Nayarit, past the inviting shores of Guayabitos, where the sandy beaches and sparkling waters create a postcard-perfect backdrop. Further along, Las Varas offers a taste of small-town Mexico with its rustic charm and friendly atmosphere. You’ll find roadside stands selling fresh coconuts and local delicacies, providing a delightful opportunity to indulge in authentic flavors.
As you approach San Blas, the road meanders through stunning landscapes and past charming farms and fields dotted with cattle, while the intoxicating fragrance of the sea grows stronger. This scenic route immerses you in the beauty of the region and gives you a glimpse of local life, making every mile of the journey an adventure filled with fun stops and beautiful views.
