Dreaming of Mexico: What You Can Get with a Side of Guacamole!
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away (okay, it was Louisiana), I was just like you - daydreaming about moving abroad, but not too far, you know? I pictured my life in a sun-kissed paradise, changing everything but also... not really. Then came one magical trip to Mexico that made me toss caution to the wind and say “¡Sí, por favor!”
Four years ago, in January of 2021, I set up camp in Puerto Vallarta. While it certainly has its charm - beaches that stretch for miles, food that makes you swoon, and people that warm your heart - I’m not sure if it’s my forever place, as the influx of people from the US and Canada means it has less of a "Mexico-y" enough feel than I’d like. But it serves its purpose as a comfy launchpad into this exhilarating adventure of living abroad, and trust me, I’m not complaining!
After trading my spacious three-bedroom nest for a cozy spot in Puerto Vallarta, I loaded up my car with my fur babies and hit the road. I embraced the winds of change, leaving behind the familiar for the unknown, and it has been a rollercoaster ride - complete with highs that make you shout “Olé!” and lows that remind you to keep it humble.
So, on my fourth anniversary of living and loving in Mexico, I decided it was time to share some of what I’ve learned. Perhaps you’re thinking about this whole moving-to-Mexico thing yourself, or maybe you just like being nosy. Whatever the reason, let me lay down some spicy pros and cons to bite into!
The Pros (Because Why Not Start with the Good Stuff?)
Affordability:
Your wallet will throw a fiesta! Living here feels like you’ve stumbled into a place where economics makes sense. You can feast like royalty without anxiety about your bank account crashing the party! That being said, you pay a pretty peso for accommodations depending on your must-haves, but there are also incredibly affordable options off the beaten (and by beaten, I mean tourist) tracks.
Warmth (Like, Seriously):
Sunshine and warmth are practically guaranteed. No winter coats or shoveling snow allowed!
The Food:
Tacos, tamales, or even taco tamales - Mexican food is a festival of flavors! And let’s be real, who doesn’t want to taste their way through street stalls all day long?
Naturaleza:
Whether you’re a beach bum or mountain goat, we've got coastlines and majestic backdrops that will leave you wondering, “Has Bob Ross been here?”
A More Chill Vibe:
Forget the hustle and bustle. Here, life’s like a leisurely stroll encouraging you to enjoy each moment like it’s taco Tuesday!
Proximity to the U.S.:
Need a quick trip to see the tu amigos o la familia? No problem! Mexico is practically a hop, skip, and a jump away from home.
Festivals Galore:
Get ready to party! There’s a never-ending parade of celebrations waiting for you. They’re a fabulous way of learning about the many Mexican cultures and traditions.
Personal Growth:
Expand your horizons! Learning a new language and connecting with a vibrant culture adds depth to life that Netflix just can’t match.
The Cons (Because Nothing’s Perfect!)
Language Barrier:
Getting through daily life can sometimes feel like you’re navigating a giant piñata - you might just get hit in the face with confusion! But hey, a little Spanish practice never hurt anyone.
Bureaucratic Shenanigans:
Don’t expect things to happen quickly! It’s all about patience, amigo.
Infrastructure Flim-Flams:
Water quality and internet outages? Those are just life’s little speed bumps to keep you grounded!
Homesickness Hits:
Sometimes you’ll miss the hugs of family or your best friend’s bad jokes. It happens.
Culture Shock:
Getting used to the local customs can be a whirlwind! Buckle up and keep an open mind.
Healthcare Navigation:
While healthcare is generally affordable, understanding how it all works can feel like solving an intricate puzzle!
Is Mexico the Right Fit for You?
Now that you've seen both sides of the taco, it's time for some self-reflection! Consider your cost of living versus income, how keen you are to tackle Spanish, and whether you’re ready to embrace the wonders of Mexican culture.
Before deciding, go visit Mexico! Chat with the many before you who made the move who are already here, soak in the rays, and see if the vibrant lifestyle fits your groove.
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore Mexico! Who knows? You may just discover your own sunlit paradise filled with laughter, new friends, and some pretty fabulous sides of guacamole!
